A b s t r a c t: The sediments comprising the exposed outer sand beaches of Ras Tanajib, Ras az-Zaur, and the north side of Abu Ali Island are medium to coarse-grained sand of variable composition. The beachface in these areas maintains a moderately steep profile throughout the year. In several localities, accretion of up to 50 cm has occurred at the roe of the beachface and is associated with the landward migration and subsequent welding of sand bars to the beach. Nearshore sand bars exist throughout the year and are nourished by sediments transported alongshore and onshore by wave-generated currents. |
