A b s t r a c t: Following the Gulf War, the environmental crisis in the Arabian Gulf provided a case study in the application of science and has shown that international cooperation may help protect the environment. This paper summarises the scientific activities of the multidisciplinary teams and the crisis management prior to the start of the EU/NCWCD project "Establishment of a Marine Habitat and Wildlife Sanctuary for the Gulf Region".
